Learn the Smoky Mountain Finish: A Chalk Painting Class
Looking for a creative activity in Butte, Montana? Join us for a special one-night chalk painting workshop at The Abode Butte!
In this month's class, we'll transform a simple terra cotta pot into a miniature mountain-inspired work of art using the Smoky Mountain Finish technique. You'll learn how to blend and mix paint colors to create different shades of the same color, building depth and dimension to create a beautiful mountain scene around your pot.
This beginner-friendly mini class introduces the fundamentals of color mixing in a fun, approachable way. You can use the same technique with different colors and palettes to create your own unique look.
What to know before class:
Bring your own clay or terra cotta pot if you have one.
Need a pot? You can purchase one at the class for $10.
All paint and painting supplies are provided.
The project is designed to be completed in one evening.
No waxing is needed for this terra cotta project.
Your $45 class registration includes the guided painting experience and the supplies needed to create your project. A pot is available separately for $10 if you need one.
Come ready to experiment with color, learn something new, and leave with a handmade piece you can enjoy at home.
The Story Behind the Paint
I've been chalk painting for nine years, and it all began with a desire to make the furniture in my own home feel like it truly belonged there.
My house was built in 1890 and reflects the Eastlake style, a period when decorative details were everywhere. As new printing and manufacturing technologies made colorful wallpaper and intricate patterns more accessible, homes embraced ornamentation. Nothing seemed to be left plain—not even the door hinges.
When I began searching for period-appropriate furniture, I quickly discovered two options: expensive antiques or worn, scratched, and forgotten pieces found at garage sales and estate sales.
I decided to learn how to repair, restore, and repaint those overlooked treasures instead. I took chalk painting classes, started experimenting, and discovered a passion that has stayed with me ever since.
There's something incredibly rewarding about taking a piece that has been neglected, unused, or even thrown away and transforming it into something beautiful that someone will love and use again.
That same spirit of creativity and reinvention is what I bring to every painting class at The Abode. My goal is to help you feel confident experimenting with paint, discovering color, and creating something uniquely yours.
